The crowd is waiting, still 8 hours until 2008.
Kirribilli were already very crowded wenn I took the train to the city this morning. The italian Pizza Shop around the corner charges 12/14 dollars for pizzas where he normaly takes 10 bucks. The train stations are prepared with removeable plastic walls. Unusual queues at the local bottle shop.
In the guesthouse where I live guys walking around with their luggage because they didn't get any more free room. Yesterday the owners quickly make from a one bedroom a double and charge now 430 dollars where they normally take 260.

I am still thinking of the best spot, still undecided if celebrating it here in Kirribilli/Mc Mahons Point (having two invitations) or moving to Circular Quay which might have one of the best views but stodged with people.

Gestern on Pitt Street Mall. Massen stroemen in den Läden umher, rennen dich fast um an den Strassenkreuzungen. Eigentlich wollte ich nur ein bisserl bummeln, als ich aber von Town Hall Station zu Myers 15 Minuten unterwegs war, wo ich normalerweise nur 5 brauch, war die Lust dazu dahin. Interessant auch das man fast nur Asiaten sah (vielleicht 80%) – war ich vielleicht gar nicht in Sydney sondern etwa in Hongkong? Fragen über Fragen!

Xmas

Walked to church yesterday night. "Church by the Bridge" (a part of the Anglican Church) is just around the corner in Kirribilli. First I wanted to go to St. Andrews church close to Town Hall which is maybe 10 times bigger than CBTB and therefore has a much better music environment (with an organ f.e.). But later I changed my plans and went to "my" church to meet some friends.

Today I met two German girls in the bus on my way back from the Aquatic centre. They asked for a Mexican restaurant and so we came into talks.
When I asked them about their plans in Australia one of the girls told me that she is looking for a man she can marry because she wanna stay here and never go back to Germany. She really sounds serious about that.

During my talks with her I laughed about that but later when I was at home and thought about it again I wasn't amused anymore. How can a girl be such calculating?

Anyway, the Ozy guys can be happy. She was very pretty (if that counts)

The ban is broken

2 weeks ago I still had no job and now I have 4 job offers. OK, not in my profession yet but the bottom of the valley seems to be reached.

I have to work hard (polishing cuttlery and glasses f.e.) but what do you get for free these days. This is the price I have to pay to stay in such a beautiful country.

X-mas time

Today when I walked back from the state library to Martin Place station a familiar song reached my ears. Silent Night, isn’t X-mas still one month away?? A big crowd watched on a screen to some X-mas actions and in front of that, Santa Claus ready to go with his sleigh.

Then a (very small) firework started, unfortunately I just had my cell phone cam with me so the photos aren’t very good, especially the lights at the X-mas tree were much nicer in reality than on the pics.

Money, money, money

Job Hunting is going on. Because I didn't find a job for my profession so far I am currently looking around for some casual work.
Letzte Woche hatte ich 2 trial Termine (sorry guys for changing to German but can't explain that in English now) bei Strassencafes, leider haben die mich nicht gekommen. Hab dann quasi 2 Tage umsonst gearbeitet. Fehlende waiter-experience! Das La Flare am Circular Quay war eigentlich das Schlimmste, nur 10 Dollar die Stunde. Australiern denen ich das erzaehlt habe meinten "Wolli, Du arbeistest fuer 10 Dollar?!!".

Aber was soll man machen wenn man die Kohle brauch. Mittlerweile spar ich auch schon extrem am Essen was den Vorteil hat, das ich meiner Idealfigur endlich nah bin?! Sogar den Ideal-BMI habe ich erreicht, was ich vorher nie geschafft habe. Der Beach kann kommen :-)

Diese Woche hatte ich nun endlich Erfolg, eine Bar (etwas poshi ich gebs zu) on the Rocks wuerde mich nehmen. Da hatte ich aber schon wieder nach der Schicht so doof rumgedönst, was nich gut ankam. Ich war beim Chef oben im Buero und er meinte wie es fuer mich war. Ich natuerlich ehrlich wie ich bin (ist IMMER ein Fehler, guys): "War Ok, aber als ich fast 2 Stunden Gläser und Besteck polieren musste habe ich mich halt schon gefragt - und dafür hast du jetzt 5 Jahre studiert??? - I don't know, I have to sleep a night about it".
Das kam natürlich nich so gut rüber. Zu dem Zeitpunkt war ich aber auch echt alle, erster Tag, volle Hektik alles Neu, die doofen Gläser wo ich mir sogar die Hand aufgerieben hatte und und und.
Gut wäre halt echt die Bezahlung, 16 Dollar und irgendwie murmelte er etwas von 40 Dollar Trinkgeld - pro Tag nehme ich mal an. Ausserdem hatte ich den Eindruck, dass er fair ist z.B. meinte er, dass ich den Tag bezahlt bekomme was echt unueblich ist, da die Trial alle in der Regel umsonst sind.

Morgen habe ich jetzt einen weiteren Trial in einem Bottleshop was bestimmt cooler ist weil ich Wein und so zum Kunden bringen kann (von den schweren Kisten mal angesehen). Freitag dann noch ein Talk mit dem oben beschriebenen Pub wie es weitergeht - hoffe mal er hat mir meine offene Antwort nich übel genommen und Samstag überführe ich für 50 bucks ein Auto zur Werkstatt in einem anderen Suburb und zurück. Meine erste Tour im Linksverkehr, hoffe mal das geht gut... :-)

Ach ja, und dann ist ja auch noch Wahl am Samstag!!

The world's so small...

When I walked around Circular Quay on the weekend I saw two guys which I still remembered beeing always at the University Library where I worked for.

And indeed, one of them worked on the lending desk (nearly a colleague to me) and the other girl was quite often at the computer pool (my workplace). I was so happy when I saw them though I don't know their names. Just to see a "Giessener" around makes me very happy.
Naturally we had to speak about my hometown, about the most famous beergarden in the city, the "Ulenspiegel" and finally the University itself.

They said that they were on a trip through this region, came over from New Zealand. Now, before flying back they still staying for seven days in Sydney.

The most funny thing was that we already met 3 times in Sydney. Yesterday at CQ again and today. Somebody was calling "Wolfgang" while I crossed George street and when I looked around - they were it.

My new job -> Waiter

Today I had my first working day as a waiter. I was working in a small cafe on Circular Quay, with two table rows.

Luckily there was a German girl who gave me a short briefing how it works. It wasn so difficult because I was just employed as a runner, that means that I did not cash up or take the order. Nevertheless it takes a while until I had all the table numbers in mind. But after that time it runs quite well, what can you expect from a first day?

Unfurtunately he don't pay me because he said that this was just a trial day but I got a meal at least. Though I was quite used up afterwards it was a good experience for me.

Hope he will call me again for further paid hours. Until that I will run another application tour tomorrow. Cross your fingers for me!

On our city day trip we had a stop at the Victoria Park Market as well. A historic building with a lot of small and nice shops.
The Celebrity Walk of Fame (a part of Victoria Park Market) was opened by Sir Robert Muldoon on July 12 1984. Originally it was the old horse ramp that leads between the Stable buildings and the courtyard. Since its opening many outstanding New Zealanders have been honoured by placing their hands, feet, or a combination of both, in cement. Some of the famous personalities and sportsmen and women have been Sir Edmund Hillary, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Billy T James, Sir Robert Muldoon, John Walker, Rachel Hunter, David McPhail and Jon Gadsby to name but a few. Their imprints attract visitors who can't resist comparing their own hand and footprints with these great New Zealanders (below).

Back to Oz -> 2500 bucks worse off

Wenn ich meinen Flug, den ich nach Germany buchen musste um in NZ einzureisen nicht ersetzt bekommen, habe ich sage und schreibe insgesamt $2500 fuer die Visaverlaengerung hingeblaetert. Bei solchen Summen frage ich mich selbst, ob das Ganze Sinn macht.
Hatte heute noch lange Gespraeche mit Flight Angency und Airline, Immigration Department etc.

Kommt jetzt alles darauf an ob die Insurance Company Stress macht oder nicht, ich ahne allerdings nichts gutes da sie behaupten wird ich haette den Flug umbuchen koennen.

Hintergrund:
Unter Bridging Visa Status (indem ich mich befand) kann man nur offshore ein neues Australienvisa beantragen. Also auf nach nach NZ.
NZ laesst einen aber nur einreisen, wenn man ein gueltiges Ruckflugticket besitzt. Fuer Oz liegt das ja offiziell zum Zeitpunkt der Einreise noch nicht vor, da ich dies ja erst in NZ beantragen muss.
Loesung waere ein Refundable Flight, den gibt es aber fuer Germany Trips nicht, angeblich, sagten zumindest die Flugagencys die ich aufgesucht hatte.

Sollte ich jemals wieder in solch ein Situation kommen, werde ich nur ein refundable Ticket ordern oder wenn es das nicht gibt, ein Return fuer Oz. Bleiben mir dann wohl Diskussionen mit den Customs nicht erspart.

New Zealand

Nachdem ich nun schon laenger nicht mehr dazu kam, nuetze ich die Zeit in New Zealand um meinen Blog zu aktualisieren.
NZ ist ganz anders, erst mal war ich etwas geschockt als ich von 25 Grad Waerme im etwa 10 Grad kuehleren Auckland eintraf.

Heute dann auch weitere Ernuechterung beim Wetter, trueb und regnerisch, halt wie ein deutscher Herbsttag. Bin froh das es mit meinem ETA sofort geklappt hat und ich in 2 Tagen wieder die "Heimreise" antreten kann. Auch wegen dem Hostel, 80 bucks pro Tag und dann verschimmeltes Bad und gestern abend kein Wasser fuer 6 Stunden ohne Vorwarnung.

Positiv hat mich die gute Luft ueberrascht, man merkt irgendwie die Waelder die Auckland umgeben und ist richtig happy mal durchzuatmen. Lustig war auch heute im Mc Donalds (ja, wo soll man sonst hingehen, wenn man sich noch nich auskennt) meine Tischnachbarn -> Spatzen. Flogen direkt in den Laden rein um haben sich von den Pommesresten ihren Teil rausgepickt.

Gut fand ich auch an den Strassenkreuzungen, dass die Restzeit bei der die Ampel auf Rot schaltet angezeigt wird. Nach einer animierten Figur die zum Ueberqueren auffordert, werden die Sekunden zurueckgezaehlt. Na, waer das nix fuer D ;-)
